What is a neurodevelopmental disability?

Neurological conditions that affect the early developing brain are referred to as neurodevelopmental conditions. Some examples include Autism Spectrum Conditions, Intellectual Disability, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and certain Genetic Conditions.

These conditions give rise to differences in a person's cognitive, mental, or social abilities, and in turn, may challenge how that person copes in certain environments or with their day to day living. In such situations they are referred to as a neurodevelopmental disabilities. Like any disability, neurodevelopmental disabilities can benefit from specialist support and intervention, helping the person to achieve wellbeing and their full potential.

What is telehealth psychiatry?

Also known as Telepsychiatry, it is the utilisation of video-conferencing technology to carry out clinical assessment and consultation.

Telepsychiatry greatly improves access to specialist care for people in distant locations, including rural and regional areas, and also in situations where face-to-face attendance may be time-consuming, costly, or situationally challenging (e.g. for individuals that are sensitive to new environments). Studies have demonstrated that telehealth can be as effective as face-to-face consultations in achieving improved health outcomes.
